IN NEW MUSIC WE TRUST LIVE, O2 Carling Academy, Newcastle THIS gig marked the first date in what is sure to be a busy weekend of events for the BBC Radio 1 team as they take over Tyneside with an impressive line-up of artists in tow.

Under the banner of In New Music We Trust Live, the evening got off to a promising start as new music champion, Zane Lowe, took to the decks to bring the heaving – although it would be fair to say on the whole mainly pre-pubescent – crowd three hours of live music from acts such as The Courteeners and Sunderland post-punksters, The Futureheads.

The gigs promise to bring Geordie revellers an eclectic line-up of artists over three nights – proved by the announcement of the first act of the night, Plan B, who opened proceedings with a soulful selection of songs from new album The Defamation of Strickland Banks. Next up was Morrissey favourite and indie band The Courteeners, who took to the stage with all the swagger of a band recently deemed by the NME as having finally found their niche after years of living in the shadow of fellow Mancs, Oasis. Playing a selection of songs from their new album Falcon, singer Liam Fray treated fans to a passionate, roaring selection of tunes, including Will It Be This Way Forever, the tonguein-cheek You Overdid It Doll, and missing you love letter to their home town, The Opener.

The Courteeners have definitely grown up and are starting to leave the comparisons firmly behind them.

Despite crossing over to the dark side for the night, The Futureheads returned to the Academy – the venue that they opened back in 2005. Their love for the North East came through in every chord and quip from vocalist Barry Hyde, and the four-man team brought the night to a climax with a selection of songs that left the crowd wanting more.

Along with tunes such as Heartbeat from the provisionally entitled album The Chaos, set to be released in April, the boys brought us Beginning of the Twist, Hounds of Love and the fantastic Decent Days and Nights.

If the weekend continues in the same vein it will definitely be something fans will want Radio 1 to repeat in the not too distant future

A MUM whose life hung in the balance has paid tribute to the efforts of the doctors and nurses at Cheltenham General Hospital who saved it.

Caroline Meadows was diagnosed with cancer of the ovaries after visiting her doctor with a swollen stomach and groin pain.

The 45-year-old was sent for an ultra-sound scan and immediately diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

She was told she would need an operation to remove them straight away to prevent the disease from spreading. But two days after her operation at Cheltenham General, Caroline’s lung collapsed and doctors were forced to fight for her life.

She said: “At the same time as being diagnosed with cancer they told me I had fluid on my lung, but it was the cancer they were most concerned about. I was rushed to intensive care after my lung collapsed and spent six weeks in hospital. I remember my twin daughters coming in to see me and they were so worried but the doctors and nurses were great. They sat them down and explained everything

Allergies, being that they often occur instantaneously with little reaction time, can be very serious or even fatal. Persons who experience indications of unease in the vicinity of an allergen often get allergic reactions. Well known allergens are dogs, cats, bee stings, dust, dust mites, trees, weeds, molds, and foods, such as nuts, strawberries, and shellfish, that result in reactions like skin rashes, hives, itching, sneezing, or watery eyes within a short while of exposure. Respiratory seizures, wheezing, nausea or vomiting, pains in the chest and abdomen, tongue swelling, and even unconsciousness are more violent possible reactions. Immediate treatment is necessary in the case of even more violent reactions that involve anaphylaxis or else the victim can die or go into shock. Although some reactions can take place instantly, others can take a few hours, while some may only happen a whole day after exposure. Repeated exposures to allergens often result eventually in more severe allergic reactions, each time requiring less and less exposure. Antihistamines like Benadryl, or some decongestants, help to relieve reactions to environmental and pet allergies, where some people may actually go as far as getting immunotherapy and treatment for asthma. As much as possible, allergy inducing agents like shellfish, poison ivy and peanuts, not to mention bee stings must be steered clear of as they result in extreme reactions on exposure. Experiences of severe allergic reactions have prompted some adults and children to carry an Epi-Pen in preparation for any accidental exposure. Ready for emergency administration, Epi-Pens contain epinephrine in a pre-filled syringe. This is used by injecting it into any large muscle in the body after pulling off the needle guard. There is no need to take off any clothing since the Epi-Pen can be administered through clothes. It is absolutely unacceptable to take your eyes off someone who is experiencing an allergic reaction. After using the Epi-Pen, if the person does not show signs of getting better, urgent treatment must be sought.
